How Coming off the Pill Changed my Mental Health

When I first went on the pill, I loved it. I stopped getting periods (I had seven years without one), which was a godsend and it was one of the biggest reasons I didn’t want to come off it – that and getting pregnant of course. However, I had noticed a huge change in my mental health and I couldn’t be sure but always thought it was down to my pill.

Eventually, I had some other issues and as a result of being diagnosed with polycystic ovaries, I asked the doctor how my pill could be impacting my mental health and my body in general. I was on the pill that you take every day without a break and the doctor said that the hormones it’s made up of are the same hormones that make women, and I quote, “go loopy” when they are pregnant.

It was a no-brainer for me to them come off the pill and look at other methods of contraception (I’ll come onto this in another blog post). I didn’t really have anything to lose by trying something new but had a lot to gain if it would make me feel better.

I was expecting that it could take months for me to feel normal again but the doctor assured me that even in a weeks time I would notice the difference and he wasn’t wrong. Since coming off the pill, I am considerably less anxious and I just feel like a weight has been lifted.

Don’t get me wrong, I still have my moments but even people around me have noticed a change in the way I am. I’m so much more relaxed and just happier in myself. Without stating the obvious, I just feel less hormonal.

We get mad at family members or boyfriends who take steroids but really what is the difference? It’s just deemed a lot more acceptable for us to pump our bodies full of hormones. Don’t get me wrong, the pill helps people in so many ways but it just didn’t work with my body and that’s ok.

I’m not saying that everyone on the pill should come off it.  I work in B2B public relations and are by no means a doctor. I’m only repeating what was told to me and how I have felt. If you want some advice, go to the doctors and speak to the professionals. I’d be interested to hear your stories and what contraception has worked best for you though!
